## Advisory Workflows
### Legal Department Benchmarking
Use this workflow when a client wants to understand how their legal function compares to peers.
**Step 1 - Gather baseline data**:
Collect from the client: total legal spend, FTE count, revenue, outside counsel spend, contract volume, matter mix, technology stack.
**Step 2 - Normalize metrics**:
Calculate ratios using the Key Metrics tables above:
- Legal spend as % of revenue (benchmark: 0.4-1.0%)
- Outside counsel ratio (benchmark: 40-60%)
- Legal FTE per $B revenue (industry-specific)
- Technology spend as % of legal budget (benchmark: 3-8%)
**Step 3 - Identify performance gaps**:
Compare each metric against benchmarks. Classify gaps:
| Classification | Meaning | Action |
|---------------|---------|--------|
| GREEN | Within or above benchmark range | Maintain current approach |
| YELLOW | 10-25% below benchmark | Improvement opportunity |
| RED | >25% below benchmark | Priority area requiring intervention |
**Step 4 - Generate output**:
Use the Benchmarking Brief template below.
### Legal Risk Assessment Framework
Use this workflow when preparing a legal risk landscape analysis for a client engagement.
**Step 1 - Define scope**:
Identify which risk categories apply. Use the Practice Areas taxonomy to map the client's exposure across: Corporate, Litigation, Regulatory, IP, Employment, and Legal Ops.
**Step 2 - Assess each risk category**:
For each in-scope category, evaluate:
- **Likelihood**: Rare / Unlikely / Possible / Likely / Almost Certain
- **Impact**: Negligible / Minor / Moderate / Major / Critical
- **Current Controls**: What mitigations exist today?
- **Velocity**: How quickly could this risk materialize?
**Step 3 - Calculate risk score**:
Risk Score = Likelihood (1-5) x Impact (1-5). Map to priority:
- Score 1-6: LOW - Monitor quarterly
- Score 7-12: MEDIUM - Review monthly, assign owner
- Score 13-19: HIGH - Active mitigation plan required
- Score 20-25: CRITICAL - Executive attention, immediate action
**Step 4 - Prioritize and recommend**:
Sort risks by score descending. For HIGH and CRITICAL risks, recommend specific mitigations (process, technology, staffing, or outside counsel engagement).
### Compliance Gap Analysis
Use this workflow when assessing a client's compliance program against a regulatory framework (GDPR, CCPA, SOX, FCPA, etc.).
**Step 1 - Select framework**:
Use the Regulatory & Compliance Landscape table to identify applicable frameworks based on client jurisdiction, industry, and data flows.
**Step 2 - Build requirement inventory**:
For the selected framework, list each major requirement as a discrete item. Cross-reference with the client's current policies, procedures, and controls.
**Step 3 - Assess compliance status per requirement**:
| Status | Definition | Priority |
|--------|-----------|----------|
| Compliant | Requirement fully met with evidence | No action |
| Partially Compliant | Some controls exist but gaps remain | Medium - remediate |
| Non-Compliant | No controls or evidence in place | High - immediate plan |
| Not Applicable | Requirement does not apply to client | Document rationale |
**Step 4 - Build remediation roadmap**:
For each gap (Partially Compliant or Non-Compliant), define: remediation action, responsible party, target date, estimated effort, and dependencies.
### Contract Portfolio Assessment
Use this workflow when advising on legal department contract management maturity and CLM transformation.
**Step 1 - Assess current state**:
Evaluate across five dimensions using 1-5 maturity scale (Ad-Hoc / Repeatable / Defined / Managed / Optimized):
- Template standardization (clause libraries, playbooks)
- Workflow automation (routing, approvals, execution)
- Obligation tracking (renewals, milestones, compliance terms)
- Analytics and reporting (cycle times, deviation rates, spend)
- Integration maturity (ERP, CRM, procurement, e-signature)
**Step 2 - Calculate maturity score**:
Average across five dimensions. Map to overall maturity level:
- 1.0-2.0: Foundational - manual processes, high risk
- 2.1-3.0: Developing - some automation, inconsistent
- 3.1-4.0: Established - standardized, measurable
- 4.1-5.0: Advanced - predictive, optimized, strategic
**Step 3 - Identify improvement priorities**:
Focus on dimensions with the largest gap between current state and target state. Cross-reference with the Contract Management KPIs table.
**Step 4 - Build transformation roadmap**:
Phase improvements into Quick Wins (0-3 months), Foundation (3-9 months), and Optimization (9-18 months).

## Discovery Questions
Use these to scope engagements and understand client context:
- What is your current total legal spend and how is it split (in-house vs outside counsel)?
- How mature is your legal operations function (ad-hoc, developing, optimized)?
- What legal technology stack are you using (CLM, e-discovery, matter management)?
- Where are you on the AI adoption journey for legal workflows?
- What are your top 3 legal risk areas right now?
- How do you manage and track outside counsel performance and spend?
- What is your contract volume and current turnaround time?
- How do you coordinate across legal, compliance, and privacy functions?
- What diversity and inclusion commitments apply to your legal panel?
## Anti-Patterns
- **Providing legal advice**: Consulting Research MUST NOT give legal advice -- provide industry context and frameworks only
- **Jurisdiction confusion**: Always specify which jurisdiction's law or regulation is being discussed
- **Ignoring privilege**: Recommendations must consider attorney-client privilege implications
- **One-size-fits-all**: Law firm economics differ fundamentally from in-house legal department economics
- **Technology-first**: Legal transformation starts with process, then technology
- **Stale legal references**: Laws change frequently -- always verify current status of any cited statute or regulation
- **Ignoring ethics rules**: Professional responsibility and conflicts of interest are non-negotiable
